Dr. Toshio Horiuchi
Toshio Horiuchi obtained his M.A (2003) and Ph.D (2007) from the Department of Indian Philosophy and Buddhist Studies, University of Tokyo. His Ph.D thesis was published as Vasubandhu's Proof of the Authenticity of the Mahāyāna as Found in the Fourth Chapter of his Vyākhyāyukti (Tokyo: The Sankibo Press, 2009, in Japanese). Since 2007 he visited several institutions in various capacities, including: Research Fellow, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (PD, 2007–2010); Visiting Scholar, University of California, Santa Barbara (2009); Researcher, Tokyo University (2010–2011); and Research Associate, International Research Center for Philosophy, Toyo University (2011–2016). Since 2016, he is Visiting Researcher of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Toyo University; Visiting Researcher of the International Research Center for Philosopy, Toyo University; and BDK fellow, University of Hamburg.
His research interests include Indian Buddhism, especially the Laṅkāvatārasūtra and Vyākhyāyukti on which he published the following monographs: Ryōgakyō (Ryōga Abatsutara Hōkyō), Tokyo: Daizō Shuppan, 2015 (a collaborative work with late Prof. Dr. Jikido Takasaki), and Vasubandhu’s Exegesis of the Āgamas: An Annotated Japanese Translation of Chapter 2 of the Vyākhyāyukti, Tokyo: The Sankibo Press, 2016, (both in Japanese).
