The Indian Yogācāra or Vijñānavāda school is well known as one of the two great schools of Indian Mahāyāna thought. However, it is difficult to find reliable, accessible, and easily understandable works that inform the reader in detail about the literary history and teachings of this school. It is true that many aspects of its teachings and literature are still debated. Nevertheless, in view of the wealth of often excellent studies on individual topics that have appeared in German, Japanese, and English in recent decades, it is a desideratum that our knowledge of the Vijñānavādins be brought together. Anyone who wishes to write such a book must first give a definition of the school. She or he must also define the scope of its literature and the period in which this school existed. The present paper is devoted to a discussion of these preliminary matters.
The lecture will be held at ESA-Ost, Raum 120, Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1, 20146 Hamburg, and via Zoom. For those who wish to participate via Zoom and are not students/members of Universität Hamburg, please write a short email to Prof. Dr. Wangchuk one day before the event: dorji.wangchuk@uni-hamburg.de.
