Seeking Rebirth in Śambhala - Mongolian Texts on ’Pho ba and Other Related Practices
This lecture focuses on a set of texts on ’pho ba and other related practices for rebirth in Śambhala, composed in the Tibetan language by early twentieth-century Mongolian authors on the eve of the Communist revolution and shortly after, during the period of the perceived, imminent peril of Buddhism in Mongolia. Abounding in imagination and visualization practices, the discussed ’pho ba texts demonstrate that these practices are about transformation from the life and death in a troubled and perilous world to a new life in the idyllic Śambhala, the enduring realm of Buddha Dharma. The lecture also addresses the roles of different types of imagination in these practices and their epistemological efficacy
