I assume that Buddha-wisdom had been designated as mahājāna (< mahājñāna) at an earlier stage of the development of the Lotus Sūtra, but was interpreted incorrectly later as mahāyāna (great vehicle), which was then adopted by those who produced other scriptures in order to define a new concept of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Presumably, the wordplay on yāna/jñāna, as found in “The Parable of the Burning House,” may have given rise to this misinterpretation.
